4 vs. 4 with 4 extra players (basic form)

Drill Description

  • The players are divided into three teams of four. Teams A and B play 4 vs. 4 in a 25 x 35-yard field on two goals with goalkeepers. The players on Team C position themselves evenly along the two sidelines as wall players.
  • Teams A and B try to score goals, focusing on playing decisively and cooperatively. They may pass the wall players, which are limited to two touches.
  • A round may last up to four minutes.
  • After an active rest period (easy run, stretching, simple technical exercises), one of the teams on the field trades places with the extra team for the next round.
  • This exercise may be played as a tournament. Three points for a win; in a draw, in team receives one point. After each team has played against both of the other teams one (or twice), total up the points.

Coaching Tips

  • Wall players have unlimited touches.
  • Extra players are only allowed one touch (for advanced players).
  • Only Team A may use the wall players in building its attack; however, A's players are limited to two touches. B gets no extra help, but has unlimited touches. After three minutes, A and B switch roles.
