Learning to Defend 4 (unorganized defense)

Situation 4: Turnover in the middle with a big gap to goal

Drill Description

Team Blue

  • The defensive line is pushed up
  • E has his/her back to goal
  • F, G and H move of the ball, different runs

Team Red

  • Do not speculate on off-side
  • Protecting the goal comes before winning the ball back
  • Despite E having his/her back to goal, D does not put pressure on E right away (only when E is close enough and the turn allows him/her to become an immediate threat), D drops back centrally and only puts pressure on E when the distance to goal becomes a more imminent threat (final third)
  • A drops back and gets ready to portantially intercept a diagonal ball to F
  • B drops back and marks up G
  • C comes back, goalside, to prevent a through ball for H
